About the age of 40, the prostate undergoes a hormone-mediated growth spurt, due to an increase in the testosterone metabolite, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The enzyme responsible for the production of DHT is found primarily in the cells of the prostate, scrotal skin, testicles and scalp. DHT causes prostatic enlargement as well as male pattern baldness.
Saw Palmetto Extract Inhibits DHT
A natural substance, saw palmetto (Serenoa repens), has long been used by herbalists for bladder and urinary problems as well as an aphrodisiac. The active ingredient has been found in the liposterolic extract of saw palmetto berries. Recent studies have demonstrated the ability of this extract to inhibit the 'enzyme responsible for production of DHT and, therefore, effectively reduce problems associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BHP) such as:
1) a weak stream
2) dribbling
3) frequent trips to the bathroom
4) painful urination.
Saw palmetto extract was found to inhibit DHT in three ways:
1) by blocking the formation of DHT
2) by inhibiting the binding of DHT to the cell receptors in the prostate.
3) by blocking the uptake of DHT into the cell nucleus.
Listed below are some of the double blind studies, which show the effectiveness of the liposterolic extract of saw palmetto. Dosage used in these studies was between 80 and 320 mg. per day. Each Prosta Glan capsule contains 100 mg of Saw Palmetto 4:1 extract.
 Prosta Glan Ingredients Proven Effective in Clinical Studies In addition to Saw Palmetto extract, the Prosta Glan formula includes other ingredients shown to be effective in reducing prostate problems. Zinc (as amino acid chelate) - 3.3 mg. Reduced Size of Prostate (Fed Proc, 1976, 35, p 361) Zinc has been shown to reduce the size of the prostate as determined by rectal examination, X-ray and endoscopy. Zinc appears to inhibit prolactin secretion, which reduces the uptake of testosterone into the prostate, which in turn reduces the production of DHT. Pumpkin Seed Concentrate (Cucurbito pepo) - 10 mg. Decongestion of Prostate (Schilcher H: Z F Phytother 2/2 (1981) 14-16) Pumpkin seed improves the tonicity of bladder muscles and reduces congestion of the prostate. Pumpkin seeds contain high concentrations of organic zinc. Raw Prostate Concentrate - 80 mg. Highest Natural Source of Zinc Raw prostate concentrate is an excellent source of protein bound zinc and nucleic acids. Raw prostate has higher zinc content than pumpkin seeds. Pygeum (Prunus africanum) - 25 mg. Reduce Congestion, Edema, Inflammation (Archivo Italiono Urol 60,133; 1988) The bark of this large evergreen tree has been extensively researched. Uva Ursi (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) - 10 mg. Urinary Antiseptic, Diuretic and Astringent (Planta Medica, 18, 1 (1970) Magnesium (as gluconate) - 10 mg. Commonly Deficient Patients with BHP are commonly found to be deficient in magnesium. Glycine - 135 mg., Alanine - 135 mg., Glutamic Acid - 135 mg. Symptoms Improve (Am J Ger, 1962, 10, p 42-30) These three amino acids are highly concentrated in the prostate gland. In a controlled study of 45 men, night--time urination was relieved or reduced in 95%, urgency reduced in 81%, frequency reduced in 73% and hesitation alleviated in 70%.
