The History of Cat's Claw
The Cat's Claw story begins more than 300 years ago in the rain forests in the Peruvian Amazon. It is a woody vine that grows to more than 100 feet in length in the highlands of this rain forest. For hundreds of years the native Indian tribes have used the inner bark and root to prepare medicinal tea in the form of decoction. According to Indian lore this medicinal tea is used to cure everything from tumors, cold sores and colds to serious diseases. There are many medically documented cases where Cat's Claw was used to the amazement of attending doctors.

Immodel, a laboratory in Austria created a pharmaceutical from the extract of this mysterious plant. The drug is said to be used successfully to treat AIDS and cancer. Dr. Brent Davis has been working with Uncaria Tomentosa since 1988 and has written excellent articles about his experiences with Cat's Claw calling it "A New World Class Herb." Dr. Davis has used Cat's Claw for all sorts of digestive tract disorders from Crohn's disease to ulcers, even hemorrhoids.

In 1989 an Austrian Scientist was issued a patent for the way he isolated six oxindole alkaloids from the root of this plant. These alkaloids have proven to have a pronounced enhancement effect on phagocytosis (the ability of the white blood cell and macrophages to attack, engulf and digest harmful microorganisms, foreign matter and debris). Besides the oxindole alkaloids, Italian and Peruvian researchers have isolated other beneficial constituents including several polyphenols and triterpines, plant sterols beta-sitosterol, strigmasterol and campesterol. This might further explain the antioxidant, antiviral, antitumor and antiinflammatory properties attributed to this herb.

In the words of Dr. Brent Davis, "Uncaria Tomentosa is a world class herb which has the power to arrest and reverse deep seated pathology, allowing a more rapid return to health in the context of concomitant A.K. therapies."

The rain forest is a medicinal treasure trove-with more than 200,000 species of plants in a stable, self-perpetuating ecosystem. Less than 2 percent of the species are known and account for about 40% of our pharmaceuticals.

From deep within the Peruvian rain forest, Cat's Claw has exploded into the nutrition world-used for hundreds of years by natives, scientists have recently discovered the benefits of the use of Cat's Claw to help build the immune system, digestive system and other degenerative complaints.

The plant Uncaria Tomentosa is a woody vine which grows up the trees, sometimes 100 feet long, with two curved thorns at the base of each leaf, attaching itself to the tree like a cat's claw. Una de Gato, Spanish for Cat's Claw, is harvested from the bark of the vine, rather than the root, to protect the important resource.

"...Beginning in the 1970's and continuing through today, studies conducted at research facilities in Peru, Austria, Germany, England, Hungary and Italy suggest that Uncaria Tomentosa may be beneficial in the treatment of cancer, arthritis, bursitis, rheumatism, genital herpes and herpes zoster, allergies, ulcers, systemic candidiasis, diabetes, lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome, PMS and irregularities of the female cycle, environmental toxin poisoning, numerous bowel and intestinal disorders, organic depression and those infected with HIV virus." It has been known to treat hepatitis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, flu, and may be helpful in reducing the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy.

Austrian scientist, Klaus Keplinger received two U.S. patents for the isolation process of six alkaloids found in the plant. These unique alkaloids enhance the immune system greatly. They help white blood cells to engulf and digest harmful foreign matter. One in particular, rychophylline, has the ability to reduce platelet aggregation, which reduces clot formation and could be helpful for a healthy cardiovascular system. Further research has isolated other compounds polyphenols, triterpines and plant steroids, which might further explain the herb's anti-oxidant, anti-viral, anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory properties.

Cat's Claw.A Remarkable Intestinal Cleanser
After using cat's claw in working with approximately 150 patients between 1988 and 1992, Dr. Brent Davis reports "Uncaria tomentosa has the ability to break through severe intestinal derangements that no other available products can touch." He refers to the herb as "the opener of the way" because of its remarkable ability to cleanse the entire intestinal tract and help patients suffering from many different stomach and bowel disorders including leaky bowel syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease, diverticulitis, hemorrhoids, fistulas, gastritis, ulcers, parasites and intestinal flora imbalance. By cleansing the intestinal walls, cat's claw enables the body to better absorb nutrients, thus helping to correct nutritional imbalances created by digestive blockages.

Many doctors today believe that cat's claw may infection lodged in the bowel and perhaps even the mesentery, which can derange the uterus and associated anatomic parts: the prostate, liver, spleen, kidneys, thymus and thyroid, for starters." Davis calls cat's claw "a world class herb hich has the power to arrest and reverse deep-seated pathology, allowing a more rapid return to health."

The Ashanika Indians of Peru have long regarded una de gato tea as a sacred beverage. It is used as a cleansing and tonic herb for the immune, intestinal and structural systems.

In traditional medicine of Peru, una de gato is categorized as a "warm plant" or, more accurately, for warm conditions (inflammations) including arthritis, gastritis, asthma and dermal and genito urinary tract inflammations. It is also used to treat diabetes, cancer, tumors, viral infections, menstrual disorders convalescence and debility. A few tribes also use cat's claw as a remedy for dysentery, and at least one tribe uses the herb to treat gonorrhea.

Cat's Claw can Reduce Pain and Inflammation in Arthritic Conditions
The anti-inflammatory effects of cat's claw have proven beneficial in the treatment of arthritis, rheumatism, bursitis and gout. As an antioxidant, it also helps protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.

Its beneficial effects in treating arthritis pain may also be due, in part, to its ability to cleanse the digestive tract and aid in removing toxins from the body. Arthritis, joint pain and inflammation as well as chronic fatigue, allergies, immune deficiency and a host of other conditions have been associated with defects in intestinal permeability (leaky bowel syndrome) and toxin overload.

Also add protection from pain. This may explain, in part, how cat's claw has been helpful in reducing pain associated with chemotherapy, radiation treatment and AZT use.

A wealth of beneficial phytochemicals has been found in cat's claw including quinovic acid glycosides, several oxindol alkaloids, proanthrocyanidins, polyphenols, triterpines and the plant sterols beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol and campesterol. Researchers believe that the activity of the whole plant extract is greater than the sum of its parts.

Reports that have been Published in the U.S. regarding the potential of Cat's Claw
Dr. Satya Ambrose, N.D., co-founder of the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine reports "...seeing significant improvement in patients suffering from Crohn's disease, ulcers, asthma, uritis, shingles, dysbiosis and chronic fatigue syndrome." She also reports "...Cat's Claw seems to enhance overall immunity while increasing stamina and energy in patients who suffer from physical and mental exhaustion due to an overactive or stressful lifestyle."

Dr. John Finnegan, N.D. reports "...I have used Cat's Claw as an integral part of holistic programs that are having remarkable success against many diseases including cancer, colitis, candida, immune system weakness and even AIDS."

Dr. Julie Clemens, N.D. and Homeopath reports "... a significant reduction of the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy in cancer patients." She also reports "...Mother had severe circulatory problems in her legs and found walking to be difficult and extremely painful. Within a few weeks, her circulation improved and she was able to begin walking with almost no pain."

Dr. Donna Schwontkowski, suggest that cat's claw has the ability to stop vital infection in early stages, help patients who are chemically sensitive, fight opportunistic infections in AIDS patients and decrease the visible size of some skin tumors and cysts.

Suggested use: For general maintenance, 1000 to 1500mg per day (2 to 3 capsules); others have reported usage of 2 to 6 grams per day (4 to 12 capsules) for deep-seated problems. In our research we found most medical doctors prescribe 3 grams per day.

Caution: Not to be used by pregnant or nursing women. Keep out of reach of children.

Note: There are two herbs referred to as Una de Gato (Cat's Claw)-Uncaria Tomentosa and Uncaria Guianensis. Guianesis does not contain all the important Alkaloids.
